Developed between 1963 and 1966 as a result of the success of the M16 in Viet Nam, with contemporary companies hoping to duplicate the success that Colt had. The CAL was very similar FAL design, but utilized a rotating bolt instead of a tilting breechblock, and right side controls (most notable the charging handle was moved). Clever rubber track over charging handle cutout to prevent debris from getting to the interior. Interesting semi-detachable trigger guard to allow use with heavy gloves. Distinct polymer handguard with vent. Front sight is a post adjustable for elevation and protected by ears, while rear sight is a 2 leaf aperture with 250 and 400 meter designations. 12 port flash hider. Right side of magazine well marked "KATSENES Cie - SANTA MONICA, CA. USA. / MADE IN BELGIUM". Adjustable gas system. The magazine for these guns are equally rare, and this example has one. CONDITION: Overall excellent, retaining the vast majority of the factory finishes with crisp markings. Extremely minor marks from handling and storage, possibly shop wear. Buttstock and pistol grip have some more scuffs and handling marks than balance but are strong and excellent. Mechanically fine with exception give to bolt hold open which does not automatically catch (but holds fine if manually operated), bore is excellent with crisp rifling. Front sling swivel was taped by a previous owner to prevent accidental dings. The CAL is extremely rare as it was produced for a very short time, with the high price from the standard of quality FN demanded deterring potential buyers. Despite the short production numbers, the CAL went on to inspire the FNC, which was a cheaper version of the CAL and was very successful. EMW
