Developed prior to the Civil War, the Greene rifle uses a locking bolt action breech for .53 caliber paper cartridges primed via an underhammer cap lock. Approximately 4500 rifles were produced by A. H. Waters, with the majority sold in foreign contracts, 900 were purchased by the US as their first bolt action, and approximately 250 by militia units. This rifle has an unusual oval rifled 35" barrel with bayonet lug front sight, and ladder rear sight. Stock is plain walnut with 3 nitre blued bands, 2 marked "U", a blued trigger guard, and trap butt plate. CONDITION: Very good overall. Portions of bright blued finish preserved on trigger guard assembly and bands with balance of rifle exhibiting a pleasing brown patina with some older oxidation spots. Stock retains vast majority of its oil finish, showing some impressions throughout. Very good bright bore and crisp mechanics. BAS
