Originally manufactured for use in the Civil War, this example was converted into a sporting buffalo rifle and is currently fit with a heavy .50 caliber octagon barrel stamped on top flat "H. SCHLEGELMILCH" and inscribed "Eau Clair, Wis." German born Herman Schlegelmilch actively worked in Eau Claire as a gunsmith starting in 1860. Standard repeating Spencer action with 3-line address above chamber. Walnut butt stock is complete with steel butt plate and is painted with faded patriotic motifs and a partially illegible name. Sporting style walnut forend with metal nose cap. CONDITION: Good. Metal components exhibit a dark patina throughout with some cleaned corrosion spots. Stocks are dark with some added finish and impressions throughout. A 2 - 1/2" crack is present at the rear of the action at the site of an old repair. Dark, pitted bore displaying visible rifling.
