Colt Special Model 1861 rifle musket, dated 1864. 40" round barrel in .58 caliber with 3 groove rifling, multi-leaf rifle rear sight, and blade front. Barrel is dated 1864 near breech with "VP" proof on left side and has "M.L.H." inspector mark with "STEEL" next to it on left side just above wood line. 1 piece plain walnut stock in 3 barrel band configuration complete with US marked military buttplate. Stock bears "AWH" and "JT" cartouches on left side. The main difference between the Special Model 1861 and the US Model 1861 is the barrel bands with clamps instead of spring retainers. CONDITION: Good, with iron assemblies turned a cleaned gray patina with light freckling throughout. Stock is good as sanded and finish added. Action needs attention as full cock notch has softened. Bore is dark. TON
