Model 1921 regimental flag for the 666th Field Artillery Battalion. In 1943 the Office of the Army Quartermaster General had ordered the Philadelphia Depot to create unit flags with blank center shields which would display the unit crest, along with blank scrolls above and below the eagle where the unit’s designation and motto would appear. These flags would be completed when a unit insignia and motto had been formally approved. This flag, in red for an artillery unit, was obviously prepared in accordance with the 1943 directive from the Quartermaster General, with the distinctive insignia and unit designation left blank. When the unit’s distinctive insignia and motto were approved they were embroidered, along with the unit designation, on the flag. The 666th Field Artillery Battalion was formed late in the war, served throughout Europe from 1944-1945, and does not appear to have ever created a unit crest. The flag is constructed of a red silk blend that was commonly used during World War II and immediately thereafter. Bordered with gold fringe, it is double sided and superbly embroidered with an American eagle. The sleeve of the flag contains a Philadelphia Quartermaster Depot tag that bears the date "May 2, 1944". The flag measures approximately 3' x 4' not including the fringe. The flag is secured to the pole by leather tabs, and the pole is adorned with rope chords and a spade top. CONDITION: The colors remain vibrant and the embroidery is unmolested. There are a few scattered holes with the largest measuring 3". Overall very good. An attractive World War II regimental flag that is quite presentable and ready for display. JLD
