This painted eagle drum bears an American eagle clutching arrows, olive branch, and a United States shield, on a blue ground with glory of stars and sunburst rays rising from behind clouds to its rear, and has a long white-bordered red ribband painted "1861" at left and "ABC" at right. The latter is the abbreviation for the Albany Burgess Corps, appearing on their buttons and other gear, a New York militia company formed in 1833. In addition to serving n various ceremonial and police functions, the company volunteered for field service in the Civil War on April 30, 1861, and saw action with the 25th NY Volunteers. This drum has the later, shorter form used in side drums and may be an altered wartime drum: the rims are wide, show wear along the top edge and have typically wartime red paint. In any case, the paint is clearly commemorative of their wartime service and the company remained active throughout the nineteenth century. CONDITION: Very good. Top head shows age and a repaired tear. Bottom head is correct, but likely newer. Flesh hoops are intact. Ropes, tighteners, and snare are recent replacements. This is a nice example of a Civil War veterans' drum that would enhance a collection devoted the company or to the G.A.R. and other veteran groups.
