Type III M1816 musket by Nathan Starr. Fit with a 42" browned .69 caliber barrel marked at breech "US / JM / P" and dated "1832". While bright barrels were standard for Type III muskets, Starr muskets are known with unusual finishes including browned barrels. Original flint configuration with case hardened lock marked ahead of cock "US" over a sunburst with "N STARR" in an arc below. Early "MIDDTN / CONN / 1832" marking with floral motif to the rear of the cock. Full length walnut stock mounted with 3 iron bands, and "US" marked butt plate. A faint cartouche present on comb. Complete with ram rod. CONDITION: Fine. Barrel retains the vast majority of its arsenal applied brown finish with some silvering and spots of loss. Traces of case colors visible on lock plate with overall mottled gray patina. Other iron components exhibit a silvery patina with cleaned pinprick oxidation. Stock has been lightly cleaned and is shy to butt plate with some impressions. 2 small cracks present at the rear lock bolt. Especially bright bore and crisp mechanics. BAS
