Circa 1790 American brass hilted sword. The sword features a straight 32 - 7/8" spearpoint blade with a single fuller. The blade is rather plain and devoid of markings with no visible maker mark. The hilt is of brass and features a straight crossguard which develops into an equally straight knucklebow with a circular quillon. The knucklebow features a ring for a sword knot, hinting that this sword was intended for a mounted officer. Thick grooved wood grip which is wrapped with leather and secured by double twisted brass wire which fit neatly into the grooves of the handle. The grip and knucklebow meet at a square pommel. CONDITION: The blade exhibits a dark gray patina with scattered areas of pitting and spotting. Tip exhibits a slight bend. The guard exhibits a pleasant patina with scattered spotting. Leather wrap has dried but remains nicely wrapped around the wood. Slight wobble to the grip when handled. Brass wire remains tight. There is 1 noticeable crack and 1 chip under the ferrule. Overall good. JLD
