Circa 1967. A nice rounded frame boxlock (Blitz) Gebruder Merkel special order, with 28 - 3/8” demi-block barrels. Barrels are nicely fit with a 3-piece forend, top ventilated matte rib, single front bead with ejectors, standard markings and German proofs. Top barrel reads “GEBRUDER MERKEL SUHL” and is not German marked. Coin finished receiver with full coverage engraving of fine floral scroll surrounding dog and bird game scenes on the sides. Action is built with cocking indicators, non-auto safe, with a “Double Kersten” cross bolt locking mechanism and single mechanical trigger. European walnut pistol grip stock with sharp engraving, black grip cap, right-hand cheekpiece, black thin checkered buttplate and gold oval which is engraved “Donated by Nan & Frank Pachmayr To Ducks Unlimited”. Nan and Frank are best known as the owners of the Pachmayr gun works. Splinter forend with Deeley-styled latch release. NOTE: Accompanying the shotgun is a letter from Merkel, confirming that it shipped as a Merkel over-under 201E with MD-F choke, 720mm (28 - 3/8”) barrels, pistol grip stock with cheekpiece, game scene engraving, engraved muzzle fence, non-selective single trigger, and upgraded wood. The gun was delivered in August 1967 to Kruger. The note on the Merkel guncard indicates the gun was intended for Pachmayr. CONDITION: Very good. 98% blue on barrels. Good bores. Stock is good with a well-disguised small repair on top left horn along with some handling marks from use. Forend with evidence of some slight wear and handling marks. A nice and classic over/under game gun. CP
