Late 18th century, these powder horns were painted with division number for naval use on ships. There were different divisions on a Royal Navy vessel. The horn measures about 16" overall with a brass charging spout and a turned wooden plug with threaded knob removable for refilling of powder. The front of the horn is stenciled "2ND DIVISION" in polychrome yellow on a dark background. CONDITION: Retains a dark untouched and as-found surface overall. Charging spout is slightly loose and spring is broken, retains a dark heavy brown patina. Horn itself retains a dark patina on its original paint and lacquer, some carry wear and marks from use. Plug shows a worn chip on the back along one edge, otherwise very good. A very scarce division painted Napoleonic British naval horn. PROVENANCE: ex. Bob Band Collection. DMG
