Western Pennsylvania incised carved percussion rifle signed "W. COOPER" in script. This rare rifle is about 1 of 5 known rifles made under this name for Cooper, or the tradename Cooper by another maker or makers circa 1850 in the Pittsburgh area. Gun has a 40" octagon .40 caliber barrel signed in script "W. COOPER" with rifle sights. "JOSH GOLCHER" marked percussion lock controlled by double triggers. Full curly maple stock with brass hardware including a keyhole finial engraved 4-piece patchbox with 5 piercings. German silver wrist inlay. Stock has incised "COMET" pattern carving behind the cheek with incised squiggle pattern forestock carving and "S" stamping with toe to trigger guard chip carving. Comes with hardwood ramrod. CONDITION: Metal has aged surface corrosion with some pitting. Brass has aged appearance with several replaced screws in the patchbox. Stock has old coat of reapplied finish with repaired wrist break. Dark bore with functioning mechanics. Another hard-to-find Western Pennsylvania gun. DLM
