Likely made for the American Centennial in 1876 depicting all of the Americans through Grant who held the office from 1869 to 1877. At the center of the silk tapestry is a larger 4 - 1/2 x 5 - 1/2" printed picture of Washington surrounded with an elaborate needlework and bouillon wreath. Remaining presidents are pictured on smaller approximately 1 - 3/4" x 2 - 1/4" prints intertwined within a bullion and threadwork grape vine. Presiding over all is a large bullion Federal eagle clasping olive branches in one talon and arrows in the other, while flying a banner reading "E. PLURIBUS UNUM". Framed in a period gesso frame. CONDITION: Good. Presidential portraits starting to fade with some stains and minor losses to background. Bullion is still bright. Frame has some light chipping. Otherwise, an impressive example of nineteenth century patriotic handiwork!
