Impressive circa 19th century bowie knife with leather scabbard. The knife features an 8 - 7/8" clip point blade with a 6" false edge. No fuller or ricasso, and the blade meets a German silver crossguard which is complimented by the German silver escutcheon on the left grip. The grip scales are of bone and are secured to the tang by 8 retaining pins, 4 on each grip scale. The horn tipped pommel features 21 carved notches, 15 on the left side and 6 on the right side. The knife is complete with its original leather scabbard which features brass mounts and a leather belt loop. CONDITION: The blade exhibits evidence of sharpening and an older cleaning, flashing a bright sheen rather than a dull patina. Scattered areas of spotting and light pitting. Very light edge wear. Crossguard exhibits light tarnishing, escutcheon exhibits fingerprint impressions. Intact grip scales which exhibit handling wear and slight shrinkage. Pommel also exhibits handling wear. The scabbard remains firm with tight seam and scattered blemishes including areas of light creasing. Brass mounts exhibit light dents and a pleasing patina. Belt loop is slightly stiff with evident cracks and creases. Overall very good. PROVENANCE: This knife is featured on pages 370-371 of "The Antique Bowie Knife Book". A copy of the book accompanies this knife. Ex. Jim Buelow Collection and Ex. Norm Flayderman Collection. JLD
