Paul Gustave Fischer (Danish, 1860 - 1934) "The Shoemaker", an original 19th century oil on canvas framed painting, signed by the artist in the lower-right corner and dated 1902. Paul Fischer was a Danish painter known for his naturalistic depictions of city life in Scandinavia and Europe. Image sight measures 11 - 5/8" high x 9 - 1/2" wide. Depicting a scene of seated shoemaker at his small workshop, fixing a shoe. Pieces of wood and leather scrap laying near him and on the floor, broken buckets and paint brushes are scattered around, ripped wall paper behind him showing an exposed brick wall. There is light canvas crazing throughout, few tiny spots of paint loss and dust accumulation from age, otherwise good condition. Painting is presented in original gold gilt wood frame. The frame has some age related wear, gilt loss and wood chipping on edges and bottom corners. The reverse of the canvas shows four antique framing fasteners known as Shattucks (dated 1883), invented the same year by Aaron Draper Shattuck, a 19th century artist who lived in the North East.
