Originally issued a grey/green cotton duck smock patterned after fallschirmjager smocks, British airborne troops did not sport a camouflage patterned smock until late in 1941, when the camouflage "Denison" smock was introduced. Like other airborne smocks, the Denison smock was intended to be worn over the battle dress uniform with equipment worn on the exterior of the smock. The smock was developed in several patterns and due to the success of the design its wear was continued into the postwar period. This example is stamped "WOD / (Broad Arrow) / 371" on the bottom of the interior back and is devoid of any other markings. The smock falls into the configuration of post-War Denison smocks: a 3-quarter length, mid-weight cotton twill construction smock with a brush stroke camouflage pattern featuring assorted shades of brown, tan, and green. The front has a zipper closure on the front measuring approximately 14" in length, beginning mid-chest and ending at the wool lined, stand up collar. The smock also features 2 vertical rows of 3 snaps in between the lower pockets. There are 4 pockets, 2 on the chest and 2 on the forward waist, all scallop tipped with snap enclosures. There are snaps at each hip to adjust the fit. Vertical slash pockets are located in the interior chest at either side of the front zipper closure. Armpits have 6 stitched eyelet ventilation holes. No evidence of application of knit cuffs. CONDITION: The smock exhibits heavy fading and the colors have mostly washed out to a light tan. All snaps function properly and both epaulette buttons are in place. Fraying around the edges. Scattered period repairs and stains. Overall good. JLD
