Iconic Civil War repeating carbine manufactured circa 1863 to 1865 by the Spencer Repeating Arms Company. Standard 22" round barrel chambered for .56 rimfire ammunition with blade front sight and ladder rear. Case hardened lever action which feeds from a removable magazine tube housed on the butt. Plain 2-piece walnut military stocks mounted with a single barrel band, saddle ring bar, rear swivel, and iron butt plate. The initials "FB" are carved into the left of the stock. Carbine is accompanied by a black leather carbine cartridge box maker marked "E. A. CROSSMAN & Co/NEWARK/N.J" on inner flap containing 10 rounds of period ammunition. Consignor states the box was found with the carbine and believes them to have been brought back together to Maine at the close of the Civil War. 3 rounds of the ammunition were found still in the magazine tube, and the other 7 in the box. CONDITION: Good. Barrel exhibits a brown patina, with receiver a mottled gray/brown patina. Some evidence of older, cleaned oxidation throughout. Internal components retain the majority of their still bright case colors. Stocks have wear and impressions from field use. Dark bore with defined rifling. Mechanically fine. Cartridge box leather is sturdy and still somewhat pliable with outer flap surface flaking. BAS
