Introduced as a short sword for use by artillerymen and by infantry sergeants, the 1832 pattern was eventually limited to use by foot or heavy artillery. This very nice example of a Model 1832 Foot Artilleryman’s Short Sword that was produced by the Ames Manufacturing Company and bears the date 1862, which is the last year these swords were produced. The artilleryman’s sword features a double-edged steel blade and a solid brass hilt. The blade is marked "Made by / Ames MFG. Co. / CHICOPEE / MASS." in a correct Ames scroll mark, which was used from 1859-1865, on the obverse ricasso and "US / GGS / 1862" and on the reverse ricasso. The reverse face of the crossguard is also marked with the initials of the arsenal inspector “G.G.S". The brass hilt is in the standard configuration, with the pommel bearing an eagle on either side and the grip imitating scales and secured with 3 rivets. The sword is complete with its leather and brass scabbard. CONDITION: The blade remains bright and has an overall pleasant finish. There are no nicks along the double edged blade and the point remains sharp. The blade exhibits slight freckling, light pitting, and scabbard wear but remains clean. The brass hilt exhibits a pleasing patina with handling wear. The scabbard is solid, with mounts in place. Drag has a slight wiggle. The leather surface exhibits crackling and some scuffs but nevertheless seems firm. Overall very good plus. A fine example of a Civil War era artillery short sword. JLD
