These sword bayonets were produced from 1847 through 1856 for the Springfield Model 1847 Sappers & Miners musketoon, of which only 830 total arms were manufactured. Designed by N.P. Ames, Jr., the M1847 Sappers & Miners Bayonet is based on the US M1832 Foot Artillery sword that was already in production at their factory. Using the sword as basis for the design, the bayonet could not only be used as a weapon, but an all purpose tool as well. The bayonet from features a 21-3/4" double edged blade with a single stopped fuller. The ricasso is appropriately marked "US / NWP" on the obverse, and "N.P. AMES / CABOTVILLE" on the reverse. The handle is of cast brass with simulated scales and a thick crossguard ending on each side with teardrop shaped quillions. The right side boasts a brass ring-socket that slides onto the musketoon barrel with a rotating steel locking ring and a swelled pommel which contains a slot for the bayonet lug. CONDITION: The blade exhibits a dark gray patina with light edge wear and areas of pitting. Rounded tip. The hilt exhibits a pleasing patina with scattered age spots as well as scattered small dents, especially around the pommel. Rotating steel locking ring is stiff, but functions. Overall good. JLD
