US M1863 type percussion rifle musket featuring a 40" rifled barrel in .58 caliber with standard military 3 leaf rear sight and blade front. Full length military plain walnut stock with 3 barrel bands, an iron nosecap, and a US marked military buttplate. Lock is unmarked, with barrel marked with 1863 date near breech, VP Eagle proof mark, and "J.L.C. STEEL" inspector marking just above woodline on left side. Stock is marked with WPT cartouche and "POST NO 53 G.A.R." / "DEPT CONN" on left side near buttplate, indicating ownership by the Grand Army of the Republic association at post number 53 of the Connecticut Department. Post number 53 is listed as being named after Joseph K.F. Mansfield and being located in Middletown, CT founded in April of 1862. CONDITION: Good, with metal surfaces turned a gray patina with light pitting throughout. Stock is excellent for its age with markings crisp and scattered areas of light wear. Mechanically fine. Bore is dark. TON
