Lot consists of 3 wood canteens. (A) Barrel style, flat bottom, oblong profile, Wood staves secured by wood bands. Substantial remnants of green paints. Initials JC carved lightly on one end. Late 18th, early 19th century. CONDITION: Very good. (B) War of 1812 US or state military contract style cheese box. Strong remnants deep green paint. Carved initials JS and hK. Maker stamp JR on one face. 3 short leather sling loops tacked in place. Blue cloth sling and stopper added by collector for display. CONDITION: Very good. (C) War of 1812 US or state military contract style cheesebox canteen. Thin yellow paint with MS in red. 3 short leather sling loops tacked in place. Maker stamp NR on reverse. CONDITION: Very good. Some wear to paint. US under the MS faintly visible: typical of US contract canteens acquired and used by the state of Massachusetts either during the war or after. A nice group of original canteens with substantial remnants of original paint.
