This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 7/12/2022
Lot consists of 2 brass mounted small swords, one likely an infantry hanger circa 1720-1768. Privately purchased by regimental commanders, 18th century enlisted infantry swords varied in pattern. Small sword patterns are shown in paintings such as Laguerre’s "Battle of Malplaquet" and Hogarth’s "March of the Guards to Finchley", and were likely used by provincials even later. See "Of Sorts for Provincials", p.173. (A) Standard configuration with straight double-edged hexagonal blade. Plain hilt. Blade marked "Shotley Bridge" with a running animal typical of the marking of that sword manufactory, established in 1685. CONDITION: Fair, with very good blade and markings. Damage to knucklebow, quillon, pas d’ane, with wire missing and chips to wood grip core. (B) Brass mounted civilian small sword of the same period with mythological and martial motifs on the hilt. Full wire binding on grip. Narrow, hollow ground thrusting blade. CONDITION: Very good. Blade with scattered freckling, but good edge and point. Clearly defined motifs on hilt. Turk’s head knot at top of grip missing.
