Approximately 5,000 beech loading rifles chambered in .58 rimfire were built by Springfield Armory in 1865 with a trapdoor beech designed by Master Armorer Erskine Allin with leftover M1861 musket parts. This example has a shortened 29 - 3/4" National Armory Bright barrel with eagle head proof visible at breech. Blade front sight and 2-leaf rear sight. Lock plate dated "1865" with "U.S./SPRINGFIELD" and federal eagle markings ahead of cock. Plain slimmed walnut stock mounted with steel nose cap, 2-spring retained "U" marked bands, 2-piece trigger guard, and "US" marked butt plate. These shortened 2-band rifles were converted as surplus by private companies to sell as cadet rifles. CONDITION: Fine as converted. Metal components exhibits a silvery patina with traces of hardened finish visible on breech clock and cock. Stock has some scattered impressions. Shootable bore with some pitting. Good mechanics. BAS
