1855 dated US Springfield Model 1855 percussion pistol carbine. 12" round barrel in .58 caliber with correct 3 groove rifling and multi-leaf flip up rear sight with blade front. Barrel is dated 1855 at breech and retains typical VP with an eagle proof on left barrel flat above woodline. Lock is marked "U.S. / SPRINGFIELD" with typical US eagle on Maynard priming device ahead of hammer, with "1855" behind hammer. 1 piece plain walnut stock with brass mountings, grip cap mounted carbine ring, and sling. Stock is reinforced with iron backstrap. Stock retains very faint "JS" cartouche in rectangle on left side. Comes with correct carbine stock that mounts on to iron backstrap that is marked "12" and brass grip cap is marked "10". "GDM" stamp can be seen on left side of grip as well as toe of stock, indicating that this pistol carbine was once part of the George D. Moller collection. In total, only 4,021 of the US Springfield Model 1855 pistol carbine were ever delivered and examples on the market today are scarcely seen. CONDITION: Excellent for its age, with iron assemblies lightly cleaned back to National Armory Bright and markings crisp. Brass is a pleasing mellow patina. Wood on pistol is very good as cleaned and a protective layer of finish added. Stock is excellent and appears to be untouched, but is loose when mounted on pistol. Action is tight and crisp. Bore is bright with sharp rifling, possibly unfired. A high condition Springfield 1855 pistol carbine owned by one of the best known US Martial Arms authors and experts on the subject. TON
