Janus Schindler is recorded as working in Grum circa 1780. Octagonal barrel with swamped muzzle, diminutive blade front sight dovetailed horizontally into the barrel, Rear sight with 4 folding leaves. Barrel reads "Janus Schindler in Grum" etched over breech on a stippled ground, with sprays of scroll accenting maker information and muzzle. Deeply cut 8 groove rifling. Horn nosecap. Ramrod, replaced, with ovoid head and retained by 2 spirally fluted ferrules before feeding into a reinforced mouth with spiral fluted opening en suite with ferrules and well engraved scroll finial. Lock with scroll en suite on a stippled ground, with one hidden screw and evidence of original flintlock configuration. Current percussion configuration achieved via drum. Sideplate in the form of en suite scroll and scalloped edges, engraved with florals. Vacant slot on tang for a tang sight, silver thumbpiece with "GS" initials. Well executed scroll and floral relief carving at ramrod mouth, tang, forward of trigger guard, cheekpiece, and right side of buttstock. Double triggers with rear set, front wire, with adjustment screw. Flowing jaeger style trigger guard with stand of arms and flowing finial en suite with scroll and engraving en suite. Butt with inset pieces of engraved floral scroll on patchbox, toeline, and cheekpiece, with long topstrap at heel engraved en suite. Large sling loop just behind nosecap, and stud on toe line. CONDITION: Very good. Barrel has been rebrowned, probably at the time of conversion, with some softening to etching, and visible oxidation. Balance of metal fittings are very good, cleaned in the European fashion, with crisp engraving. Wood has general handling marks, with bumps and bruises throughout; small chip under lock. Trigger guard finial has 2 small sections of inlay missing. Some minor areas of spotting to drum. Mechanically fine, bore is excellent with strong rifling and minor frosting. This is a particularly attractive rifle, with well executed inlays and carving. EMW
