New Army double action revolver manufactured by Colt in 1898. This revolver was manufactured as Model 1895 or 1896 and was subsequently arsenal modified with the butt lanyard loop and refurbished. The left side of the barrel is stamped "COLT D.A. 38", with Colt's address and patent information across the top. Bottom of barrel is stamped "2690". US "R.A.C." inspector stamp is present on the left side of the frame, as well as on the bottom of the grips. Interior of right grip panel is lightly handwritten "W.R. SUTHERLAND" above the assembly number in black ink, with the remaining characters being indiscernible. Major metal components are blued, with some smaller components being nitre blued. Frame is mounted with 2-piece smooth wood grips. Matching assembly numbers are present on the frame, cylinder crane, cylinder release latch, as well as on the interior of the grips. Revolver is accompanied by a unmarked period leather holster. CONDITION: Metal components retain good amounts of their arsenal reapplied blue finish, exhibiting wear showing through to gray and brown patinas, as well as some scattered areas of cleaned pitting overall. Bore is bright, exhibiting some scattered spots of inactive pitting and retains good rifling throughout. Grips show scattered marks and impressions from handling and storage, with the right grip panel exhibiting a loss at the frame inlet on the lower left corner. Holster shows age related wear overall, but is otherwise sturdy and serviceable. MLW
