Plains Indian horse quirt composed of an expanding cylindrical haft made of elk antler, circa 1870-1885. Top is pierced through for attachment of an Indian tanned buffalo hide wrist strap, incised with red wool trade cloth and decorated with sinew sewn classic Crow geometric motifs in dark blue, white, white heart rose, greasy yellow, powder blue, green, and pink seed beads. Whip section is a split pair of harness leather whips, braided at 2 points throughout the length and secure at the bottom with a carved wooden peg. Top is wrapped with a red trade cloth band secured in place with an Indian tanned buckskin wrap. Traces of green rubbed pigment remain on the edges of the whip. CONDITION: Solid overall with visible sweat stains to the wrist strap from period use, and age commensurate wear to the leather whip. Some light insect damage to 2 of the red trade cloth panels.
