Seldom seen Blackfeet mirror board. Circa 1875-1890. Hand carved wood with fine incised lines and geometric cutout designs around a triangular mirror in the center. A row of brass tacks surrounds the mirror border and trims the edge of the board. Board is painted green overall with the inside portion being red or rubbed with red pigment. Top of board is decorated with a combination of adornments tied on with buckskin. Europeans frequently traded small glass mirrors to native peoples. Plains Indian men wore them on their fur chest decorations or inserted them into carved wooden frames. Often, they ornamented the frames with brass tacks, metal inlay, or paint. Men typically carried mirrors such as this in dances or ceremonies. CONDITION: Solid overall with typical age scratches and silvering to the mirror backing and tarnishing/oxidation to the silver tweezers. BRM.
