Excellent example of an early 20th century patriotic U.S. naval trapunto commemorating a sailor's cruise. This embroidery was most likely made in Japan as a souvenir to commemorate the US fleet's voyage to Japan. The trapunto banner is constructed of beautiful silk floss and metallic thread that is embroidered on a slate black silk field. The designs feature typical American themes and are very patriotic in nature. The words "IN. REMEMBRANCE. OF. MY. CRUISE. HAWAII. PHILIPPINE. CHINA. AND. JAPAN." are embroidered overtop of 13 white stars followed by a spread winged screaming eagle that features exquisite detailed feathers and eye. The eagle is perched on bundles of arrows which are behind a thick silk threaded patriotic shield that contains a photograph of three unidentified sailors. The shield sits in between a panoply of American flags, three on each side. The flags drape down to the bottom of the banner and hover above crossed cannons, an anchor, and cannonballs that rest on top of a banner that reads "E PLURIBUS UNUM". Finally, completing the banner is a wonderful painting of a Great White Fleet ship slicing through the waves of an angry sea in the foreground of a menacing dark sky. CONDITION: The colors remain strong and vibrant. The thick designs remain intact with no signs of loose threads and pop out of the banner. The banner is not secured in the frame and moves when handled. The frame defects are the only flaw of this wonderful display piece. The trapunto is perfectly preserved and would compliment any naval collection. Overall excellent. JLD
