Ryan & Son are recorded in Birmingham circa 1820-1835. This example has an iron barrel with an octagonal to round barrel with a thick wedding ring at girdle. Swamped barrel with a pair of thin raised rings at muzzle, one with a beaded decoration. Barrel retained by a pair of keys. Top of barrel with spring mounted triangular bayonet, locking lug at muzzle. Flat lock with simple sprays of floral scroll and engraved "RYAN & SON" in center. Fishform cock with floral spray and German silver repair at neck. Ramrod, probably the original, with worm at rear; rammer tip is damaged but probably would have had a brass head. Ramrod is retained by a single ferrule which feeds into a reinforced mouth. Flowy trigger guard with floral scroll, pineapple finial, extrusion at rear engraved with a sunburst. Checkered wrist. Metal buttplate with long heel finial, engraved. CONDITION: Barrel has a pleasing chocolate patina, with flashes of dove grey, primarily to faceted section of barrel. Evidence of a protective layer of lacquer to barrel, most of which has flaked away, with remnants in protected areas. Wood is Very good with numerous impressions, bumps, and the odd strike, but solid. Mechanically fine, bore is good with a thin layer of patina. Spring on bayonet is strong. A good example. EMW
