Made circa mid 1860s, with only about 100 being made. No markings, minus serial on the front of the frame, which is marching to the one on the barrel, and inside of the left grip leg. Iron, half round, half octagon barrel with brass pin front sight. Fine period scroll engraving on the frame and barrel. Barrel was blued, with the frame being brass (most likely originally silver plated). Period mother of pearl grips on a birdshead butt. CONDITION: Metal retains little of its original finishes, with the barrel forming an overall solid brown patina. Brass has an even tarnish. Grips have handling marks and scratches. Smooth bore is heavily frosted, with some pitting. Barrel is loose, but hammer remains tight. Mechanically operable. JWA
