Lot of 2 early nautical sextants in olive green painted wood cases, both cases bearing paper retailer labels, the larger that of Samuel Thaxter and the smaller, Samuel Thaxter and Son. (A) Larger sextant, ebony and brass, inlaid bone makers plaque: Spencer Browning & Rust London. Gradients on brass arc at bottom. CONDITION: Excellent. A little dusty. Nice patina to brass and color to wood. All parts seem to be in place. Top of case shows scuffing. (B) Smaller sextant. Gradients on inset bone arc. "BASSMENT LIVERPOOL" inlaid bone maker plaque. CONDITION: Very good. All parts seem to be in place. Slight water stain on interior of lid affecting upper left corner of label. Slight stain to maker plaque. Samuel Thaxter, 1769-1842, established his firm in 1792 and is listed in the 1796 city directory. He incorporated with his son Joseph as Samuel Thaxter and Son about 1822, dating the larger sextant before that and the smaller sometime after, though likely before 1843, when the business passed to Joseph Thaxter's son.
