Early cadet rifle, made circa 1875. Early style breech block marked "MODEL / 1873 / (Eagle's head) / US". Faint "V / P" proofs on the left side of the chamber. Faint inspectors cartouche and "P" proof on the wrist. Standard blade front sight and cadet style rear ladder. Blued finish on the barrel has been gone over with some sort of lacquer. Case coloring on the breech block is original. Stock retains its original oiled finish. Includes attached period leather sling. CONDITION: Metal retains 50% of its finishes, with a dark brown patina beginning to mix in. Stock has a few minor handling marks and scratches and a few gouges. Bore is lightly frosted, retaining very good rifling. Hammer is tight, holding both full and half cock. Sling has wear, crazing, and is beginning to dry rot. PROVENANCE: Roger Bender Collection. JWA
