K98 manufactured at the Mauser arsenal in 1937. This example was likely captured by Yugoslavia, reworked and then sold to Iraq, indicative triangle Jeem stamp over the chamber and on top of the barrel towards the breech, as well as an encircled "R" proof that is present on the left side of the buttstock. Cupped buttplate is stamped "R00375". Large ring rear sling swivel is mounted on the underside of the butt. Rear barrel band has been modified, likely in Iraq, exhibiting a wire sling loop welded onto the underside. Otherwise, left side of receiver and barrel bear early drooping eagle firing proofs, with Mauser "(Eagle) / 63" and "(Eagle) / WaA63" waffenamts present on the right side. Matching numbers are present on the receiver and barrel, with remaining components being mismatched. Bolt assembly matches itself. Stock is mounted with an unmarked leather sling. CONDITION: Metal components retain large amounts of their arsenal reapplied blue finish, exhibiting areas of wear and thinning showing through to gray patina, as well as some light inactive surface oxidation overall. Bore is dark, exhibiting oxidation and fair rifling throughout. Stock shows scattered marks, dings, and impressions from handling and storage. Sling shows some age related cracking, but is otherwise fine. PROVENANCE: Roger Bender Collection. MLW
