Colt Model 1861 Special contract rifled musket purchased for the state of New Jersey from Schuyler, Hartley, and Graham and dated 1863. 40" round barrel in .58 caliber with blade front sight and multi-leaf rifle rear sight. Barrel is dated 1863 near breech with VP eagle head proof on left barrel flat and "N.J." "STEEL" marking above wood line. 1 piece walnut stock and forearm with iron mountings and US marked military buttplate. Left flat of stock opposite lock bears "N.J." marking. CONDITION: Very good, with barrel turned a dark brown patina with markings crisp and minor handling marks throughout. Stock is excellent with no major signs of distress. Mechanically fine. Bore is mostly bright with abrasion near muzzle from period use with corrosive black powder and well-defined rifling. PROVENANCE: Roger Bender Collection. TON
