Lot consists of: (A) Indian Wars M1872 Cavalry Saber. The M1872 pattern saber was adopted in 1872 and was regulation for 30 years until the 1902 pattern officer’s sword was adopted for all branches of service. This example was produced by Springfield Armory with Springfield, Massachusetts address, and is marked as such on the reverse ricasso. The blade is the correct, slightly curved, single edged blade which is the lighter version of the 1860 pattern. The blade is adorned with wonderfully etched floral and patriotic motifs, with the obverse decorations split in half by a spread winged eagle and a gothic "U.S." on the reverse. The brass guard is the standard 3-branch cavalry guard, decorated with cast laurel leaves, and the interior of the counterguard is cast with an American eagle crouching and perched at the top of the interior clutching arrows and an olive branch, with a row of stars around the lower edge. The exterior guard has a burst of sun rays radiating outward. The grip is sharkskin wrapped and bound with twisted brass wire. Complete with its steel scabbard and brass mounts. CONDITION: Blade remains bright with unmolested etchings. Guard exhibits a mustard patina. Grip is intact with tight brass wire. Scabbard also remains bright with scattered blemishes and darkened mounts. Overall very good. (B) M1872 Staff officer's sword marked "Horstmann / Philadelphia" on the scabbard. The spearpoint blade is decorated for half its length with etched foliate and patriotic motifs. Hilt features a brass guard, decorated on the interior by an eagle perched atop an olive branch and flags. Pommel also features an eagle, with flower pommel cap. Grip is of wood, wrapped with leather, and secured by double twisted brass wire. Complete with its steel scabbard with brass mounts. CONDITION: Blade exhibits a muted gray patina with unmolested decorations. Areas of spotting and pitting towards the tip. Hilt exhibits scattered areas of oxidation between decorations. Grip exhibits wear with tight wire. Scabbard exhibits wear with a few small dents and chips in the finish. Overall good. PROVENANCE: Roger Bender Collection. JLD
