Civil War Ames Model 1840 light artillery saber, termed Type 2, this type was produced from 1860-1865, features a counterguard without a recess, and its matching metal scabbard has a throat mount similar to the M1860 cavalry saber. The sword features a blade with a pronounced curve and a single wide stopped fuller. The blade is marked "U.S. / ADK / 1861" on the obverse ricasso and "Made by / Ames MFG. Co. / CHICOPEE / MASS." in a correct Ames scroll mark, which was used from 1859-1865. Hilt consists of a brass crossguard, circular qullion, knucklebow marked "ADK" and unmarked slightly domed pommel with a turned wood handle wrapped in leather and secured with double twisted brass wire. The sword is complete with its iron scabbard which features 2 carry rings and drag. CONDITION: The blade exhibits a light gray patina with sharp tip with areas of spotting and scattered blemishes, especially on the reverse. Entire brass hilt including the pommel has acquired rich patina. Guard produces a slight wobble when handled. Grip exhibits some leather loss with slightly loose brass wire. Scabbard exhibits a chocolate patina with evident areas of pitting and surface rust. Overall good. PROVENANCE: Roger Bender Collection. JLD
