World War II veteran bring back Japanese hinomaru flag mounted in frame. These were one of the most popular trophies from the war along with samurai swords and firearms. The veteran who brought it home has been lost to history, but a translation was accomplished by author and Japanese language expert Dan King. The translation is as follows: (1) Do your best (this is an encouragement given in an order form 'Ganbare'.) (2) I will be going off to war to join you. (3) You're a son of the islands of the gods. (4) To die in service to the nation. (5) Patriotism and loyalty to the emperor. (6) The gods will help (assist, protect) you. (7) Less of self in service to the nation. (8) (signed) the Mayor of the village of Shimokawazoi Mura (It was a town in Northern Akita Prefecture that was amalgamated into Odate City along with 6 other small towns in 1955. (9) Service to the nation. (10) All four seas of the earth to fall under the rule of the Empire. (11) See the enemy kill the enemy without fail. (12) I wish I had 7 Lives to offer in service to the nation, (This is an expression that was made famous during the battle of Minatogawa in 1336 by Samurai Warlord Masashige Kusunoki). (13) Go out in good health. (14) A sincere faithful spirit. (15) Gifted to Mr. Shinzo Kobayashi. 16. Certain Victory. 17. Filial Piety. CONDITION: Good with typical light discoloration from wartime use, and one small hole in the meatball section. PROVENANCE: Roger Bender Collection. BRM.
