Well worn but very nice display of a US Centennial flag, which is constructed of glazed linen, and mounted with various pieces of GAR insignia and ribbons. The circa 1876 flag was crafted to accommodate a tasteful caricature of George Washington, mounted on a stallion, standing atop the dates 1776-1876, with the word Centennial over his head. Interestingly, the flag maker chose to use a 36 star count, 6x6 pattern canton, instead of a 37 star count canton, which was the count since the admission of Nebraska as a state on March 1, 1867, and was officially recognized on July 4th 1867. The 37 star flag would fly until 1877 until Colorado was officially recognized as a state, making the count 38. The stripe count would be 11, except 2 stripes are missing. The GAR insignia hangs where the stripes once were, and features a GAR cap badge, ghosting of an April 1897 Department of California and Nevada 30th Annual Encampment ribbon, GAR County Adjutant medal, and April 1898 Nevada City, California 31st Annual Encampment ribbon. CONDITION: The flag is well worn, and obviously missing 2 stripes and 2 stars. Heavy wear is exhibited around the bottom where several pieces are missing. Colors have heavily faded. Various cracks and creases are evident. GAR medals and insignia exhibit wear, with the detached medal exhibiting a torn ribbon. Ghosting where the detached ribbon once hung, which sheds light on how long they were mounted. Very presentable, but would need a new frame. Overall fair. PROVENANCE: Roger Bender Collection. JLD
