World War I US Marine Corps 5th Machine Gun Battalion P1917 wool uniform named on the lining. The 5th Machine Gun Battalion was assigned to the 5th Marine Brigade, which was organized at Quantico in September of 1918. Also composed of the 11th and 13th Marine Regiments as well as the 15th Battalion (separate) the 5th Marine Brigade did not see combat and never served together as a battalion but they did perform base guard duty in France. The 5th Machine Gun Battalion arrived at Brest on November 9, 1918 and upon arrival in France, the 5th Marine Brigade was assigned to the Service of Supply, which was in need of dependable troops for guard duty. The 5th Machine Gun Battalion was stationed at Camp Pontanezan and performed general duties until July 1919, when they assembled with the rest of the 5th Marine Brigade at Brest and returned to the United States early in August 1919. The uniform features a multipiece felt 5th Marine Brigade patch with purple V on the left shoulder, as well as nicely cross stitched PFC rank insignia on each arm. The collar features a nice set of WWI USMC collar discs and is complete with all of its original black painted USMC buttons. The interior lining is named to "F.F. PETERSON" which is stenciled with white paint. CONDITION: The uniform exhibits scattered areas of mothing especially on the upper right pocket, lower left pocket, and back. The stitching has come loose on the upper right corner of the 5th Marine Brigade patch. Scattered stains on the liner, bottom portion has been cut out. Overall good. Nice uniform from a desirable unit worthy of further research. PROVENANCE: Roger Bender Collection. JLD
