This Indian knife features an unusual and rare form known as double volute. This circa 1850-1880s fighting knife originates from the Athabaskan Native American Indians of the Northwest. This example is blacksmith forged iron showing a double edged dagger style blade with midrib down the center having a full tang and at the pommel butt and a double scrolled volute (also called twin volute). This pattern of blade is exclusively found amongst the Athabaskan peoples of the Northwest and Pacific Northwest. Similar examples can be found in numerous museum collections. Handle is wrapped in painted oilskin over hide. CONDITION: Overall knife shows age commensurate patina with blade showing some some light pitting and a dark patina overall. BRM.
