Commemorative painted World War I 22nd Aero Squadron insignia. The piece was created to resemble the signature logo of the 22nd Aero Squadron as it would have been painted on the side of a Spad 13 and features the colorful emblem of a shooting star, emitting a red flame, landing in the center of a blue circular panel holding 22 white stars. The background consists of green and tan camouflage. This particular recreation was commissioned for the 1962 annual reunion of the 22nd Aero Squadron, 1st Wing, 2nd Pursuit Group. The tan portion of the camouflage panel has 24 signatures of the attending members of the reunion. A typed listing is attached to the reverse of the frame, and there is a second framed paper which contains the name and information of several 22nd Aero Squadron personnel. The 22nd Aero Squadron was very active during WWI and participated in a number of operations including recon missions, bombing, destroying enemy communications, offering support for ground operations, and protecting bombing operations. Many of the men who signed this recreation were decorated during the War and these signatures merit further research. The recreation is professionally matted and framed measuring approximately 24 - 1/4" x 38 - 1/2". CONDITION: Frame exhibits handling wear including various chips in the border. List on reverse exhibits frayed edges. Framed paper with personnel information is coming apart. Overall good.
