In 1918, Remington received a government contract to produce the Colt Model 1911 as Colt alone could not keep up with the demand from the front lines in France. They produced 21,677 pistols by the end of 1918, the only year produced. This is an early three digit serial number gun that was produced in September of 1918. While the markings were different than the Colt, they were basically the same and featured all the early Colt type parts such as the long smooth trigger, wide spur checkered hammer, slide stop and safety; flat mainspring housing with lanyard, beveled edge U-notch rear sight, small front sight, matte blue war-time finish, and diamond checkered walnut grips. The blued barrel has the letter "S" stamped on the lug. The magazine has the pinned base with lanyard ring. Inspector "EEC" and eagle stamped on left side of frame for Edmund E. Chapman. Correct "E" stamp on left front trigger guard. Slide has the three line stamp with "UMC" in circle on left side. Left side of frame stamped "UNITED STATES PROPERTY". Right side of slide stamped "MODEL OF 1911 US ARMY CALIBER 45". CONDITION: This early pistol retains most of its expertly reapplied blue finish and the factory legends remain sharp. Sharp rifled bore. A clean, as refinished Remington UMC Model 1911.
