Lot consists of: (A) September 24, 1945 issue of LIFE Magazine, which depicts then Colonel James “Jimmy” Stewart posed in front of the historic courthouse in Indiana, Pennsylvania during his welcome home celebration. Stewart is a true American icon with an illustrious career as an actor and military officer, as his film career spanned over 55 years from 1935-1991, appearing in 80 films. A licensed pilot, Stewart answered the call of duty by enlisting in the Army Air Corps when the United States entered the Second World War. Despite his status as an elite MGM film star, Stewart volunteered for combat missions over occupied Europe behind the controls of a B-17 Flying Fortress. Dedicated to the cause, he earned the command of the 703rd Bomb Squadron and his only public and film appearances from during the war were scheduled by the Air Corps. Stewart attained an impressive combat record, earned the rank of colonel, and received several awards for service including the Distinguished Flying Cross. After the war, he remained in the U.S. Air Force Reserve and was promoted to brigadier general in 1959. He retired in 1968, and was awarded the United States Air Force Distinguished Service Medal. The magazine is signed by Stewart to the left of his head and the signature reads “Best Wishes, / James Stewart”. The magazine has matted on cardboard and preserved with plastic wrap. CONDITION: The magazine has not been examined out of the wrap but exhibits small creases, edge wear, and other blemishes that are typical of old paper on the cover. Signature remains bold with no fading or smudges. Overall very good. (B) Desk plaque which reads “JAMES STEWART / BRIG GEN USAF” The plaque is constructed of black painted wood and plated pot metal. Felt base. The “S” in “James” is upside down. Most likely from the 1950’s-1960’s. CONDITION: Scuffs in the paint, some letters are loose. Scattered blemishes throughout. Overall good.
