Sold by Blunt & Symns of New York in the second quarter of the 19th century, bearing an unusual engraved "J. Syms." marking within an engraved rope bordered oval on the frame. This pepperbox features a richly blued ribbed .31 caliber barrel cluster, ring trigger, foliate scroll and line engraved frame, and 2-piece smooth bag shaped ivory grips. CONDITION: Fine. Barrel cluster retains the majority of its factory applied blue with some thinning. Frame retains only a few traces of factory blue, displaying a pleasing dove gray patina. Grips are good with a few stable splits from the screw escutcheons. Mechanically fine. A wonderful pepperbox. BAS
