Lot consists of: (A) Attractive French cuttoe adorned with handsome motifs, circa last quarter of the 18th century. The cuttoe features a 24 - 1/2" blade with long ricasso and single fuller. The fuller exhibits a scene of a dog chasing game on each side of the blade: on the obverse the dog is in pursuit of a hog, while it pursues a deer on the reverse. The panel between the fuller and crossguard features ornate engravings consisting of elegant scrollwork which flank a smiling sun with vertically shooting rays. Following the blade is a crossguard, checkered at the center and on both of the quillons. One quillon is marked with 3 hallmarks. The bone grip is also decorated with a splendid checkered pattern which ends at a rounded capstan. CONDITION: The blade exhibits a pleasing patina with areas of pitting and spotting which are more evident towards the tip. Fortunately, the blade decorations are mostly unmolested and remain crisp. Edge wear is noticed throughout the length of the blade, as well as an older cleaning. Crossguard also appears to have been cleaned but the checkering remains sharp. The crossguard produces a wobble when handled. Bone grip exhibits a 1 - 3/4" crack under the crossguard with obvious handling wear and equally sharp checkering. Overall good. (B) Circa last quarter of the 18th century dirk. The dirk features a 13 - 3/4" spear point blade with small crossguard and gadrooned bone grip. CONDITION: Blade exhibits a gray patina with areas of pitting and spotting throughout its length as well as small areas of surface rust near the crossguard. Bone grip exhibits several cracks with the largest measuring 1 - 1/2". Overall good.
