A very attractive example of a US non-regulation officer's sword. These swords were imported in some quantity and were preferred by many officers as a field sword due to its sturdy steel scabbard. Modeled after the Sabre de officer Chasseurs Model 1838 and the Sabre d'officer de Marine Model 1853, this is a very attractive French style sword which would have been sought after by many US officers. Import swords of this style are usually marked by a US retailer, and this example is clearly marked "EMERSON / & / SILVER / TRENTON / NJ" on the reverse ricasso with the signature E&S keystone blade stamp on the obverse ricasso. The blade is slightly curved, with single edge, and wide fuller. Beautifully etched on both sides. The obverse features intricate foliate scrollwork which is separated by a patriotic eagle, perched on a drum and surrounded by artillery and flags. A soldier adorned in armor carries an American flag and shield just above the ricasso. The reverse is equally attractive and features mirrored scrollwork which forms a banner that reads "In defence of the laws." The scrollwork is followed by the bold letters "U.S.", etched before geometric designs just above the ricasso. The hilt is of brass, with ornate guard featuring an elaborate American eagle, perched on a shield in front of a panoply of flags, beneath a 7-star banner. Open floral scrollwork adorns the small counterguard. Attractive silver washed grip with cast simulated brass wire. The pommel is tiered and forms into a pillar style knucklebow. The scabbard is equally impressive as the sword and features gorgeous rococo style mounts. The upper mount features a patriotic eagle and shield, with the middle mount and drag featuring beautiful rococo embellishment. Ring mounts feature thick simulated feathers. A blank escutcheon rests between the upper and middle mount suggesting this sword was meant to exhibit a presentation. 2 engraved stars flank neat scrollwork designs between the middle mount and drag. The scabbard also features an ornate throat marked "U.S." on each side. Chain hanger present on carry rings. CONDITION: The blade exhibits a pleasing gray patina which only slightly mutes the decorations. There are scattered areas of pitting and spotting. Edge wear is exhibited for about half its length. Tip is chipped. Rust on both sides of the ricasso. The guard features a pleasant mustard patina with scattered dark spots and verdigris. Grip remains bright with areas of loss and obvious handling wear, produces slight wobble. Pommel also exhibits dark spots and verdigris. The scabbard features an equal patina as the hilt and exhibits scattered blemishes throughout its length. Verdigris around the mounts. There are 2 significant dents, 1 at the base of the scrollwork and another at the base of the drag, along with several smaller dents. Throat is missing the retaining pin and is loose. Between the blade designs, hilt, and scabbard, this is a stunning example of a Model of 1847 imported presentation grade sword and should be as desirable to the serious collector as it was to an officer worthy of its presentation. Overall good.
