Only 1,001 Palmer carbines were manufactured by Lamson of Vermont in 1865. Delivered soon after the close of the Civil War, the Palmer was the first bolt action arm utilizing metallic cartridges adopted by the United States. This example has a standard 20" barrel chambered in .50 rimfire, mounted with blade front sight and 2 position rear sight. Barrel is fitted with an interesting bolt action breech which is unlocked by turning the breech block a quarter turn. Case hardened lock plate is dated "1865" and marked "U.S. / E.G. LAMSON & CO. / WINDSOR VT.". Stock is 1-piece walnut checkered at wrist at a later point. Iron mounted with a single barrel band, saddle ring bar, and butt plate. CONDITION: Very good. Iron components have faded to a gray patina throughout with some oxidation. Stock has a very dark, attic-burnt crackled appearance with some impressions. Very good bore. Mechanics are sticky with hammer not falling appropriately. BAS
