Fine example of a Model 1860 Cavalry Saber, which was one of the most heavily used edged weapons during the Civil War. This example was produced by Providence Tool Company of Providence, Rhode Island and was one of 10,434 sabers the produced under the U.S. government Ordnance Department contract of February 1862. The sword is marked “US / J M / 1862” on the obverse ricasso and “PROV. / TOOL / CO.” on the reverse ricasso. The sword is in standard Model 1860 configuration, consisting of a slightly curved blade, brass guard, and center swelled, leather wrapped wood grip with braided brass wire that fits neatly into the grooves of the handle. Complete with its original steel scabbard with drag marked “JM” CONDITION: The blade has aged and exhibits a gray patina with scattered spotting and pitting. The tip remains sharp with scattered, light edge wear. The brass guard and knucklebow remain tight and exhibit a pleasing light patina with scattered blemishes. The leather wrapped grip has aged well with only scattered blemishes from handling and small cracks. Brass wire remains tight. The steel scabbard has acquired a pleasant patina and exhibits scattered small dents. Overall good.
