This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 12/14/2022
Of early US contract or Charleville configuration with 44" .72 caliber barrel not marked at breech with customary US proofs. Undated lock is from a circa 1799 to 1802 Springfield M1795 musket marked "SPRINGFIELD" in a vertical arc behind cock, and with eagle over script "US" ahead. Lock and side plate do not appear original to stock. Stock is full length walnut with deep flutes. Iron mounted with 3 spring retained bands an unmarked butt plate. During the early years of the United States it was not uncommon for large variation to be seen on muskets used by state militias and other parties, sometimes utilizing US locks. CONDITION: Good. Iron components exhibit a silvery gray patina throughout with some oxidation. Stock is very good as cleaned showing scattered impressions throughout. Frizzen has a period repair and appears to be a replacement along with jaw screw, with lock appearing reconverted. BAS
