1817 deed and attached description of land dated 31 December 1817, signed by Governor Lewis Cass of Michigan, and made out to Solomon Sibley, who was instrumental in the incorporation of Detroit as a town, served as US Attorney and congressional delegate for the Michigan Territory, and was later on its Supreme Court. Sibley and Cass were involved in the 1821 Treaty of Chicago, by which the Ottawa, Potawatomi and Chippewa ceded most of their land south of the Grand River. Cass had fought in the War of 1812 and was Governor of Michigan from 1813 to 1831, Secretary of War from 1831 to 1836, Minister to France to 1840, represented Michigan in the Senate 1845 to 1848 and 1849 to 1857, and Secretary of State from 1857 to 1860. He ran for President 3 times, resigned in protest at Buchanan's inaction in the face of secessionist movements, and was involved in exploration and international diplomacy, but was also involved in the Indian Removal Acts under Jackson. CONDITION: Excellent.
